Designing, developing, launching and now running Chatham Maritime Marina

CLIENT

South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), now the Homes and Communities Agency.

Situated on the River Medway in Kent, Chatham Maritime Marina is a 412-berth marina at the heart of a multi-million-pound leisure and retail development.

OUR TASK

Our team was chosen as project partner to design, develop, set up, and launch a new marina and boatyard inside the historic Chatham Dockyard site, doing everything from initial proposals to berth sales.

OUR APPROACH

The first step for us was to fully understand the master plan for the whole Chatham Maritime site and how the marina would fit into that plan. Our in-house team reviewed the plans and made recommendations on the design and management of this project, including the mix of berth sizes and phasing of building the berths. We also steered the design and specification of marina services and facilities that the marina would need.

We developed the business model and overall business plan, as well as planning the marina and boatyard management, and sales and marketing activities. Once the development was complete our team stepped in to handle all of the operations in the marina and boat yard on behalf of SEEDA under a management contract. We have since been granted a lease on the marina and boat yard and we continue to operate the marina.

THE RESULT

Chatham Maritime Marina is the centerpiece of the Chatham Maritime development and has proved to be the catalyst for the surrounding development, creating 12 jobs directly as well as employment within the supply chain.

In recent years, the marina has enjoyed 100%+ occupancy, which is considered to be down to its great facilities. The marina also attracts around 3000 visitors a year, with many visitors coming from Holland and Belgium.
