MDL is the UK’s leading marina operator with 18 marinas currently in the UK portfolio, 10 of which are situated on the south coast between Poole and Chichester.
OUR TASK
The marinas are subject to ongoing siltation and require regular dredging to ensure adequate depths are maintained. The pattern and scale of siltation is dependent upon the geographic location of the marinas and localised variations in tidal flows and sediment supply. Given the confined nature of the marina basins, dredging has to be carried out carefully to make certain that no damage to marina infrastructure or boats occurs, whilst also minimising any potential disruption to marina activities.
OUR APPROACH
Due to the nature of the project, we provided a comprehensive multi-disciplinary service to MDL Marinas. This service covered all aspects of the dredging project, from the initial attainment of marine licences and associated consents, through to project management of the works.
The specific requirements of each marina were identified through detailed design & planning, informed by hydrographic surveys and analysis of historic siltation rates. Based on these requirements, we selected the most appropriate dredging contractor for the project, undertaking all tender and contractual responsibilities on behalf of our client.
We worked closely with MDL Marinas and the contractor to ensure that the necessary works were completed safely and to an agreed budget and programme. We also ensured that both licence and consent conditions were effectively discharged, providing the required information to the appropriate authorities.
THE RESULT
Through our effective management of MDL Marinas annual maintenance dredging campaign, we are able to ensure that depths within the marina basins and approaches remain adequate for the safe access and mooring of recreational vessels. All relevant licences and consents were appropriately obtained and the works completed in accordance with environmental best practice.
