MDL is the UK’s leading dry stack provider with berths for 440 boats across the South Coast. We trialled the dry stack concept in the UK, and now wanted to extend the provision of this successful facility

OUR TASK

As Europe’s leading marina group, we continually evolve and develop new products to make sure our customers are well served. That’s why we introduced the dry stack concept to the UK’s leisure boat market, building the first dry stack at our Cobb’s Quay marina in Poole Harbour at the turn of the millennium.

Having enjoyed success at Cobbs Quay, our challenge was then to increase the number of dry stack berths available across our network whilst maintaining occupancy in the marinas. In 2007 we developed ambitious plans to double the size of the Cobb’s Quay dry stack, and built further stacks at Hamble Point Marina and Saxon Wharf in Southampton. Larger boats, up to 13m, were to be stacked at Saxon Wharf, whereas at Hamble Point we needed to deliver everything the customer would need at one of our busiest marinas.

OUR APPROACH

We managed the planning, design and construction processes for all three facilities in-house. The first step for our team was to assess the concept that was already well received in the US, and tailor the service package to meet the needs of our UK clientele. Our in-house engineering team managed the project through design, construction and plant procurement.

Meanwhile our sales and marketing team worked on launching the new product and promoting the facilities and benefits of dry stack to the wider market to bring in new customers to fill the additional supply of berths.

THE RESULT

All three facilities are fully operational, offering unlimited launching on demand – seven days a week, 365 days a year. Since launch, each facility has seen over 80% occupancy.
