A Luxury Superyacht Marina in Spain

Set in the heart of Barcelona, OneOcean Port Vell was acquired by the Salamanca Group in 2010. Salamanca had the ambition to re-position the marina as a class leading superyacht home port and cruising destination in the heart of Barcelona catering over 150 yachts up to 190 metres in length.

OUR TASK

Our challenge was to master plan the redevelopment of the marina, working with all stakeholders to design a marina that offered all of the services and facilities that a yacht’s captain, crew, owners and guests could want. The design also had to remain flexible to allow the marina to adapt and change to different sizes of yachts, to make best use of the water space available.

OUR APPROACH

The project firstly needed a detailed market study and research to develop a complete understanding of the target market. This included studying competitor locations across the Mediterranean and interviewing superyacht captains, crew and yacht agents.

We used a numerical model which we had developed in-house to mathematically synthesise the superyacht marina market in the Mediterranean, allowing us to determine the best possible positioning within the market for the marina. This also provided the evidence to back up financial projections for the marina.

Our designs considered several different optional layouts which were analysed to find the one that most closely matched the requirements of the market and that provided the greatest degree of flexibility.

We prepared a detailed technical report, covering our detailed market study, marina layouts, services and facilities, design requirements and a specification for the design of the marina, along with financial projections for the business.

THE RESULT

We delivered the blueprint for the marina, grounded on solid research and with guidance on detailed design and operational requirements. This allowed the local team to develop the design, construct the marina and to build the business.

OneOcean Port Vell has won the following two international design awards in the first 12 months of operation:

Best Marina & Port of the Year by Architize A+ Awards Global Project Winner by FX Interior Design Awards The marina is now fully redeveloped and has positioned itself as a Mediterranean winter base and summer charter destination, and attracts the most well-known superyachts from around the world.
