Port Napoléon
Port Napoléon is a marina, boat yard and boat sales centre in southern France where the river Rhone flows into the Mediterranean at the small town of Port-Saint-Louis.
OUR TASK
A 215-berth marina, Port Napoléon has storage ashore for over 1,000 boats, along with a range of boat building and maintenance services on-site. Port Napoléon, along with other local operators, the town of Port-Saint-Louis and the region of Ouest Provence, all wanted to increase the boat storage and services in the area, with the vision to create a nautical hub.
Port Napoléon believed there was a good demand for marine services in the area, and they expected this to increase. Our challenge was to produce a study aiming to demonstrate and quantify demand and then to design an expansion project which could promise to roughly double the boat yard and boat sales area.
OUR APPROACH
Our first step was to carry out a desktop study to assess the demand for additional marine facilities. We then conducted a competitor analysis and technical appraisal so we could develop preliminary design options. Following this, we reviewed a number of possible designs before presenting a conceptual design with increased storage ashore, a boat sales area and commercial property for tenants. The vision for the site was to create a permanent ‘boat show’ environment.
THE RESULT
Our outline design maximised frontage for boat brokerage and other retail units, taking account of the way people would go through the development, whilst creating an efficient and flexible area for extra boat storage ashore.
We produced a master plan backed up by sound analysis in a clear and logical report (in French). This meant that our client could open discussions with the local town council and other stakeholders and to begin the process to obtain consents for the development.
