Increasing the capacity for superyacht berthing and refitting
MDL, Saxon Wharf – ourselves
Situated on Southampton’s River Itchen, Saxon Wharf is a Marine Trade Centre developed by our team in 2000. The marina offers outstanding facilities for superyachts and other larger craft and includes a 200-ton boat hoist, and heavy-duty, fully serviced pontoons which can welcome boats up to 80m.
After acquiring the Saxon Wharf site, our team needed to design, develop and operate a specialist large boat and superyacht berthing and refit facility at the site.
We worked closely with key tenant Southampton Yacht Services to plan the facilities that they would need to establish their base for fitting out new Oyster Yachts, along with carrying out their established refit work on classic superyachts such as the J Class yacht Velsheda.
The plans included constructing a 200-tonne hoist dock, enlarging the apron behind the dock for manoeuvrability, dredging and installating pontoons, and constructing additional workshop units as well as a marina office and facilities.
Seven years later, we added an 86-berth dry stack capable of taking boats up to 13m.
We managed the planning and development of the project, including the construction of the initial infrastructure and accommodating the later dry stack facility. We pulled a specialist team together with skills including business planning and finance, engineering and construction, sales and marketing and commercial property management to create a taskforce to develop and run Saxon Wharf.
Saxon Wharf is now highly regarded as a market-leading commercial yard and refit facility, particularly for larger vessels. It’s operated to the highest levels of efficiency and standards in terms of health, safety and environmental awareness.
