Luxury Development at Ocean Village Marina Taking Shape
Ocean Village Marina is moving on!
Ocean Village Marina, the prestigious multi-million pound redevelopment in Southampton, UK, is now moving into its final phase. Once completed, Ocean Village promises to be Southampton’s most vibrant waterfront destination – a world class, modern setting where the city’s residents, visitors and the marina customers can come to enjoy shopping and dining.
We’ve been involved in this development right from the start, with our team offering advice on the marina infrastructure, including providing a detailed investment plan to secure this first-class marina well into the future.
Over the past 10 years, Ocean Village has seen the development of new residential complexes including the recently completed Admirals Quay development – the tallest and one of the most impressive apartment and commercial developments in Southampton. Other landmark buildings include an award-winning multi storey car park designed to serve the redeveloped Ocean Village Estate, and the Ocean Village Innovation Centre, which has provided high-quality office space for a number of businesses.
The development includes a superyacht-inspired five-star hotel set to open in 2017. The luxury hotel will extend out into the marina and include a spa, champagne bar and rooftop restaurant with stunning views. It will also have 12 luxury duplex apartments on top of the hotel, 82 separate apartments with dedicated underground car parking, and exciting new restaurants and shops.
MDL’s role – and the challenges
Our consultancy team has played a vital role in the planning stage of the luxury hotel complex, including surveying the existing infrastructure in detail. The top of the promontory that sticks out into the marina is not the easiest place to build a five-star hotel. We had to make sure the foundations for the 7-storey hotel imposes no additional load on the promontory walls, which has been achieved by transferring the load of the hotel into the ground deep beneath the promontory. The weight of the construction machinery has also been considered to ensure that it doesn’t overload the infrastructure whilst it’s being built. As part of the development, the team are planning for the future, with innovative solutions to protect the quay walls and Ocean Village Marina for many years to come.
