Andrew Morton, longest standing berth holder
One of our longest standing customers, Andrew Morton, has kept a boat with MDL consistently for the last 50 years, initially at our Woolverstone Marina on the River Orwell in Ipswich.
“In the early 1970s, when I was 29 I had a Powell 28 called Treizaine as part of a consortium. We kept her at Woolverstone Marina on the East Coast. I later upgraded to my own Elizabethan 31, Strolla, before buying my current yacht Balerno, a Moody 376 in 1989.
“I kept Balerno at Woolverstone for a few years. But living in London and having sailed down to the Hamble over the years, I got to know it and I decided to move Balerno to MDL’s Port Hamble Marina and bought a flat in Hamble.

About 10 years ago, having sold the flat in Hamble I decided to berth Balerno at Shamrock Quay. I had visited the marina before when the J Class yacht Velsheda was there, and thought it was a good location and being on the river means I can easily get out sailing whenever I like.
The staff at Shamrock Quay are very friendly and there’s lots of tradesmen there who offer a good service and look after my boat. I am grateful to all those who provide highly professional services to enable Balerno to participate in sailing races and regattas and foreign trips. Sailors like me really appreciate good food at the Yellow Welly Café and Bistro too.
