Get your boat winter-ready: Expert advice for cold-weather care

As we move into the colder months, we want to ensure that your vessel is prepared for the winter weather. With Storm Darragh behind us, our teams have been working hard to keep our marinas and your vessels safe.

However, it’s important that you take steps to winterise your vessel to protect it during the colder months. Here are some key tips to help get your boat ready for winter:

  • Engine & Fuel: Run your engine periodically, keep fuel tanks topped up, and consider changing oils and filters. Engines must be run in only while the boat is in the water, not while ashore.
  • Moisture Control: Use a dehumidifier that drains into the sink or place moisture absorbers onboard. Ensure all electrical equipment, such as dehumidifiers and tube heaters, are securely mounted to prevent movement during vessel movements.
  • Mooring & Fenders: Add extra mooring lines and fenders to secure your vessel and protect it from swells.
  • Water Systems: Drain the external shower (if applicable) and isolate it from the freshwater system. If not using the vessel, empty freshwater tanks and remove water from bilges.
  • Safety Checks: Ensure bilge pumps and float switches are operational. Check seacocks are firmly closed and not leaking.
  • Exterior Maintenance: Clean the exterior, inspect for leaks and corrosion on hull fittings, and ensure boat covers are in good condition with secure zips and poppers. Add extra sail ties to sails, including roller furling systems, and/or ensure sail covers are in place to prevent sails from opening in inclement weather and to reduce the risk of sail cover damage.
  • Remove Items: Take out any unused clothing, bedding, food supplies, and empty the fridge/freezer if not in use.
  • Tenders & Covers: Remove any tenders from the water and stow them to prevent rainwater pooling. Ensure electric leads are in serviceable condition and are not wrapped around electric bollards or pontoon cleats, as this can accelerate wear and expose cables. Electric leads should be securely fastened to prevent them from falling into the water.

Please remember, our teams are always here to help you keep your vessel safe and secure. However, your cooperation in ensuring these winterisation steps are taken will be invaluable as we head into the season.

We wish you a safe and enjoyable winter, whether you're laying up your boat or continuing to enjoy time on the water.
