Highlights at Torquay Marina: News and updates for our customers

This year has flown by! We’d like to start by saying a huge thank you to everyone who chose to keep their boat with us in 2024. Your continued support plays a vital role in making our marina a great success. Despite a few challenges this year, we’ve emerged stronger and better, and we’re excited to share some of our key achievements.

A Year of Improvements

  • Car Park and Facilities Refresh: The car park resurfacing is now complete, making it fully watertight. We’ve also refreshed the facilities area, and we’re confident you’ll agree that the updates have brightened the space and enhanced the overall marina experience.
  • Greener Marinas Strategy: In early 2024, we strengthened our sustainability efforts by building a new secure recycling compound exclusively for MDL customers. Partnering with SUEZ, our new waste management company, we aim to maximise recycling. We also invested in a brand new 1,900-litre waste oil tank to improve waste management further.
  • Pontoon Upgrades: We worked with Walcon Marine to replace the entire main walkway, ‘B’ pontoon, and its fingers. We also widened ‘A’ pontoon and installed a brand-new visitors’ pontoon. The team worked exceptionally hard, ensuring the project was a success. We couldn’t have achieved this without your cooperation and support throughout the works—thank you!
  • New Bike Rack: We’ve installed a new bike rack in the car park, making it easier and more convenient for those who enjoy cycling to and from the marina.

Welcoming New Team Members

This year we welcomed two fantastic new additions to the team:

  • James Owen-Bradley transitioned from casual worker to full-time in January and has quickly become an integral part of the team.
  • Guy Edwards joined us in November as a night Marina Operative after a brief time away from MDL. Previously, he held the same role at Brixham Marina and was excited to bring his experience to Torquay.

Keeping the marina clean

To tackle the challenge of bird droppings on certain areas of the marina, we reintroduced Hawking as an effective solution. Partnering with a professional company, their team regularly patrols the marina with a bird of prey. This year, we’ve had the pleasure of a Harris's Hawk, and we’ll continue with this initiative next year to help maintain a cleaner marina.

Community Events

As we sailed through the season, we held many memorable events:

  • Pontoon Treats: We hosted numerous pontoon ‘Table of Treats’ events, featuring delicious samples from local suppliers.
  • Crab Fishing Competition: In August, this much-loved event returned with music and commentary from Torbay Hospital Radio and face painting by ‘Faces, Glitz & Glam.’ It was another resounding success that we’re eager to continue in the future.
  • Annual Berth Holder Party: It was great to see so many of you at this year’s party. Next year, we’re planning to mix things up with a car park party – details to follow!

As with last season, we were delighted to welcome numerous visitors to Torquay Marina, especially on our brand-new Visitors’ Pontoon. While the weather didn’t always shine, the marina shone brightly for all who visited.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we move into the new year, we’re committed to further improvements at Torquay Marina. We remain committed to putting you at the heart of everything we do by strengthening our team and expanding our events calendar with even bigger and better activities.

Thank you for being part of our Torquay Marina community. We look forward to seeing you in the new season, if not before.

Warm regards from the Torquay Marina Team.
