Pyrotechnic and Electronic Distress Flares

In our latest video, James Tudor-Williams from Force 4 Chandlery at Port Hamble Marina talks us through marine distress flares and the differences between pyrotechnic and electronic versions, and how best to use them.

Pyrotechnic flares are the more traditional type and available in three different formats - handheld, parachute and buoyant smoke flares. Electronic flares are the modern type and use ultra-bright LED lights to emulate traditional flares. Both types have their pros and cons, which are discussed in this video.

Whichever your preference, it is always advisable to keep flares onboard and to make sure that they are in date and working safely.
