Getting confident on the water with MDL Marinas

With more than three decades at MDL and a lifetime around boats, Shamrock Quay Manager Barry Radband has seen every kind of new-boater wobble – and knows exactly how to turn those first-season nerves into confidence. His message: start simple, stay safe and use the knowledge all around you.

Start with safety first

Confidence begins with being prepared.

“Boating should be enjoyable – do it safely and ensure you have sufficiently suitable safety equipment, warm clothing, lifejackets, mobile phones etc.”

Stay on top of maintenance

Engines don’t forgive neglect – and there’s no hard shoulder at sea.

“Lack of maintenance, especially on your engine, is a common mistake. There is no hard shoulder at sea to pull into should a failure occur.”

Ask for help with mooring and manoeuvres

Most nerves happen at the berth. Your marina team is right there.

“One of the most apprehensive elements is arriving or departing the berth. Our teams are there to assist with lines and are just a call away. Familiarise yourself with the tides and the areas you’re cruising.”

Practise short, local trips

Small days out build big skills

“Short local day sails are extremely beneficial for new boaters, understanding how their boat performs, handles and manoeuvres underway and at slow speed in confined quarters. Understanding your marina approach, distinguishing channel markers and mooring in various tidal conditions all build confidence.”

Invest in proper training

RYA courses give structure, confidence and real-world competence.

“There are numerous sea schools and RYA training courses available ranging from taster sail days to Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Level 2 Powerboat Handling, VHF, Navigation, Coastal Skipper and ultimately Yachtmaster. Each will provide you with experience and confidence.”

Use your marina team as a resource

MDL’s people love boating – and love helping new boaters even more.

“All of our teams have a passion for boating and being on the water. Their experience and knowledge of the local sailing grounds and boats in general is often a great source of information to our new customers.”

Tap into the tenant community

From brokers to engineers, onsite experts are part of the support network.

“Each of our on-site tenants offer services to our customers, in turn supporting their pastime.”

Join events and meet other boaters

Community accelerates learning and makes boating even more fun.

“There are lots of boat-specific owners’ groups, sail-in-company events and opportunities to meet fellow sailors and owners through clubs.”

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Most new-boater stress melts with a five-minute chat.

“Marina staff are here to help – don’t be afraid to ask.”

Pro tip: do a pre-departure check every time

A simple habit that prevents 90% of first-season drama

“Pre-departure check of your vessel and its safety equipment will ensure a smoother sailing experience.”

Whether you’re brand new to boating or settling into your first season, MDL’s teams, tenants and training partners are here to help you learn with confidence — and enjoy every moment on the water.
